There are plenty of people that you could ask, and they would tell you that Lexington is a town that knows how to throw a party. We just recently hosted The Breeders’ Cup and all its extenuating festivities. We do a pretty swell Fourth of July as well. From backyard barbecues to major corporate-sponsored events, we like to get people together and eat some delicious food, enjoy an adult beverage, and celebrate…well, whatever needs celebrating. And that, very often, could not (or should not) be carried out without the aid of a catering service. Lexington has plenty to choose from, and this week I’m going to do a brief rundown of just a few of the local services you should keep in mind for your next event.

Selma’s Catering – Located on Henry Clay Blvd. in Lexington, owner Selma Owens is operating a flourishing catering and event service that has gained a well-deserved reputation for putting the client first. Offering a full range of catering menu options including box lunches for businesses and hot or cold buffet offerings like Sushi or Jumbo Baked Potato stations for weddings and large events, any of the event managers (or Selma herself) would be happy to discuss whatever would best suit your needs. And while Selma’s does do most of their events in the Lexington area, they are more than happy to travel to other locations – just ask! In conjunction with her catering business, Selma also recently opened the Liberty Road Café, specializing in a great variety of lunch sandwiches and quick take-away options for folks with extra-busy schedules. Be sure to swing by and check out the Pork Banh Mi or Pimiento Cheese sandwiches, or grab a quart of their delicious chicken salad to go for something light on these hot summer evenings! 720 Henry Clay Blvd. (859)971-2763 or

Dupree Catering + Events – This extremely popular catering service was begun in 1985 by Harriet Dupree Bradley, and in 2014 merged with AZUR catering. Offering services for events of all sizes, Dupree delivers beautifully-presented and great-tasting options to please every taste, and are also comfortable serving those with special dietary needs or food allergies. Having a small event at home and want something special? Dupree has a pick-up menu available for pre-ordered options. Business owner or manager? They currently feature a Daily Workplace Dining Service, where clients can choose from a full-service hot or cold buffet option (set-up and breakdown included), or a drop off meal service for more casual workplace environments. Dupree also prides itself not only on serving Ky Proud items, but also being an award-winning green establishment, even offering clients environmentally-friendly disposable dinnerware and pan options.  And being part of the AZUR Food Group, which includes Azur Restaurant and Patio and Brasabana restaurants, clients can rest assured they have a great reputation to back up their great quality and service. 1006 Delaware Ave. (859)231-0464 or

Seasons Catering & Special Occasions – At the corner of N. Ashland and National Avenues you’ll find one of the top catering services in Lexington. Seasons Catering & Events is the culmination of a dream for husband-and-wife team Chef Michael and Kellie. After running a successful food business together for a number of years, they established Seasons in 2000, and have been providing clients with great food and premier service ever since. Having extensive experience with all types and sizes of events and venues, the event management staff is ready to accommodate virtually any vision their clients may bring to the table. One of the things that makes Seasons standout is the variety of other services they offer, including full event planning, parking and valet services, design and décor, and of course their ice sculptures and fruit carvings for which they have become known. And if you happen to have a special menu request that is not already available, their staff will work closely with you to make it happen. 333 N. Ashland Ave. (859)266-6661 or

Bluegrass Catering – If you live in the Lexington area, you know that the current happening neighborhood is the Distillery District on Manchester St. A long-time resident of that particular area is Bluegrass Catering, founded by Jill and Judy Bakehorn, a mother-daughter team who have been bringing all the delights of Southern-style and comfort-based food to their clients since 1991. A majority of their events take place in The Barrel House, the event facility situated near them in the district. It can accommodate up to 400 guests inside and, weather permitting, up to 400 more outdoors in the Barrel House Gardens. Their extensive menus and easy-to-understand price points make planning events of any size a breeze. And for those of you out there who are kids at heart, don’t miss out on the Ice Cream Cart option, with banana splits and ice cream sundaes, it’s a great way to end your gathering and will surely have your guests talking long after its over! 903 Manchester St. Ste. 110 (859)231-7676 or

So there are just a few of the myriad options one would have for making parties of any size a little extra special. Don’t forget, there are also many restaurants in the Lexington area that cater, so if you have a favorite or are going for a particular theme, be sure to check them out as well. Hope everyone has a safe, happy and eventful summer!
