This is a story of the emotion of nostalgia, and how we “remember” things in our own minds, even if sometimes it’s not completely accurate. Oh, and it’s also about granola bars. I won’t say I’m a huge fan of them, but they can be pretty handy if you’re needing a quick snack on the go. My point about the nostalgia is that when I saw that Sunbelt had come out with a few limited edition flavors, I was immediately transported back to junior high (yes, that’s how old I am) and high school, as Sunbelt was the brand of granola bars you could purchase in our school’s cafeteria. Back then the only flavor that would do was original chocolate chip, and was it ever tasty. So for the sake of childhood memories, I grabbed a couple of boxes to see if they were everything I remembered.
Sunbelt offers a solid variety of flavors, including the original Chocolate Chip that we all remember. All of their bars are of the chewy variety, and some of the newer awesome flavors include Apple Cinnamon, and the two that I chose, Key Lime Pie and Carrot Cake. All of their bars are also free of preservatives and don’t include any high fructose corn syrup, so you can feel pretty good about what you’re putting in your body. To learn more, check out their website. They do also offer cereals, fruit bars and chocolate dipped granola bars, because as we all know, chocolate makes everything better.
And about those flavors I tried…the Key Lime Pie was something I couldn’t resist trying. I do like a good key lime pie, and if you’re going to offer that to me in chewy granola bar form? Yes please. The flavor of these is…intense. I feel like the sweet flavor (which is enhanced by the white chocolate chips) dominates the sour-ish lime notes in the bar, but it is definitely there. So if you’re a big key lime fan, put these on your list. The Carrot Cake bars got my attention because I do love a good carrot cake and seriously, when was the last time you saw someone do a carrot cake granola bar (excluding protein bars and the like)? I love it when a company takes the leap and comes out with some flavors that aren’t being done by every other company? The flavors a more balanced here. although I don’t know if the drizzle over the top was supposed to be cream cheese or not – I just assumed it was, but it’s not very cream cheesy (yep, technical term), just more like a plain glaze. But I ain’t mad at it.
So yes, these aren’t the healthiest bars on Earth, but that’s not why I’m talking about them. Did they taste the way I remember Sunbelt bars from my school days? Pretty darn close, although I think brain may be gilding the lily a bit after all these years. Still, I do like these a lot and plan to try some other flavors in the future. You can pick these up most major supermarkets for relatively cheap – I got mine for about $2.50 a box – and I do recommend you give them a shot. Have a great week!
